UWA to hold Earth Week celebration

The University of West Alabama invites the community to celebrate Earth Week at Lake LU, Thursday, April 25. UWA students, faculty and staff are invited to enjoy festivities including a free picnic lunch and an on-going cornhole tournament. Prize money will be awarded to the winners of the canoe and four-man john boat race.

Dr. Lee Stanton, biological and environmental sciences assistant professor, leads UWA’s sustainability efforts and oversees the Earth Week celebration.

“We encourage the UWA family and Livingston community to participate in the Earth Week festivities. Earth Week is a time to appreciate the resources that we have in Livingston, and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate that than at Lake LU,” Stanton said.

All members of the community are encouraged to participate in Mountain of Cans by bringing recyclable aluminum cans to compete for a chance at cash prizes. This competition is one that Stanton hopes will turn community members’ focus towards a recycling center managed by the City of Livingston.

“We’re very excited to see the City of Livingston opening a new recycling center in town. I hope the community tunes in to Studio 96 throughout Earth Week to learn about the sustainability efforts they can incorporate into their daily lives.” Stanton said.

On Wednesday, April 24, the fishing competition will begin at Lake LU at sunrise. This is an individual competition with cash prizes presented to first and second places.

On Thursday, April 25, students are encouraged to take part in the Lake LU and Nature Trail clean up at 10 a.m. Points will count towards service hours for the coveted Homer Award among the greek community on campus. Also, the University’s athletes can earn accrue community service hours.

At 11 a.m. on Thursday, a scavenger hunt that focuses on clues placed along the UWA Nature Trails begins. The individuals who finish with the quickest times will win a cash prize.

UWA students, faculty and staff are invited to enjoy a free picnic lunch at noon on Thursday. While enjoying hamburgers and hotdogs, attendees can watch the on-going cornhole tournament and KanJAM.

Canoe and john-boat racing begins at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. Cash prizes will be awarded to three categories—men, women, and coed.
