UWA football moves up in poll

LIVINGSTON – On the heels of a 44-0 season-opening victory at Clark Atlanta, West Alabama improved to No. 13 in this week’s American Football Coaches Association Division II Football Poll.

The ranking represents a jump of two places from the preseason poll. The Tigers (1-0) are the highest ranked team from the Gulf South Conference. Valdosta State dropped to 20th and Delta State 22nd following upset losses in week one.

Pittsburg State (Kan.) still holds onto the top spot, and received 28 first-place votes this week. The Gorillas are followed by Minnesota-Duluth, Northwest Missouri State, Midwestern State (Texas) and Wayne State (Mich.) in the Top 5.

UWA travels to Birmingham Saturday for a 6 p.m. kickoff at FCS member Samford at Seibert Stadium. The Bulldogs are 1-0 after defeating Furman, 24-21, at home last week.
