UWA announces 2013 football schedule

A potentially nationally televised game on the CBS Sports Network and a home game against the defending NCAA Division II national champions highlight the 2013 University of West Alabama football schedule.

“We are extremely pleased with the way we were able to work out our football schedule for 2013,” UWA Director of Athletics Stan Williamson said. “We are very excited to have nine NCAA Division II games and also to have the opportunity to possibly play Florida Tech in a nationally televised game.”

UWA, the defending Gulf South Conference champions, will open the season at home against Clark Atlanta on Sept. 7 and will host four GSC rivals at Tiger Stadium in October and November. Conference home games in 2013 are against Delta State (Oct. 5), defending national champion Valdosta State (Oct. 12), West Georgia (Oct. 26) and Shorter (Nov. 9).

Road games include a trip to Lake Charles, La., to play Football Championship Series member McNeese State on Sept. 14, GSC newcomer Florida Tech on Sept. 19, Midwestern (Texas) State on Oct. 19 and North Alabama on Nov. 2. Final approval CBS Sports Network will nationally televise the Florida Tech game.

“We are very excited about the 2013 schedule. As always, the Gulf South Conference part of our schedule will be very tough,” UWA head football coach Will Hall said. “This is a much improved schedule from years past because we have nine Division II games, which should help us come playoff seeding time.

“It is also huge for our university and football program to have eight games in Alabama. That is unheard of in Division II,” Hall said. “Our administration was extremely helpful in allowing us to get this done.”

Homecoming is set for Oct. 26 against West Georgia. Non-conference games against Concordia College and Central State round out the schedule.
