Tiger baseball splits opener

Demopolis High (1-1) baseball opened its 2013 season with a split at American Christian Monday, earning a 6-3 win in the opener before falling 7-6 in the nightcap.

The Tigers used four pitchers to get through a game that lasted approximately three and a half hours in the opener. Michael Brooker worked two full innings, surrendering just one hit while striking out three and allowing one run.

Matt Eicher picked up the win, working an inning and two-thirds. Walter Davis put out a fire at the end of the fourth inning and lasted two scoreless frames while striking out three. Brock Montgomery came on to pick up the four-out save while striking out one and allowing one hit.

Offensively, the Tigers never trailed in the game. Demopolis put a run on the board in the first and regained the lead with a run in the third. Demopolis pushed two more across in the fourth and another pair in the fifth to seal the game.

Will Tucker led the offense with a 2-for-3 effort that included a double and a pair of runs scored. Montgomery went 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. Wesley Anderson hit a solo home run in the game while Mason Rogers doubled and had an RBI. Devin Stroud singled and knocked in a run. Eicher scored a run, Josh Mangum picked up two RBIs and Davis singled in the contest. Tyler Charleston walked twice.

In the nightcap, the Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the first and found themselves battling back to tie the game in the top of the seventh with a two-run inning.

The rally proved all for naught as ACA hung a run on the board with two outs in the home half of the seventh to steal the win.

Anderson opened the game on the mound, striking out one over two innings of work. Tucker worked four innings, allowing only five hits while Tyler Oates worked the final inning.

Davis led the the offense with a 2-for-3 game in the leadoff spot while doubling and scoring three runs. Brooker went 2-for-4 with a double.

Stroud singled, walked twice and scored a run. Anderson walked, had an RBI and scored a run. Mangum scored a run while Tucker and Montgomery each had an RBI.

The Tigers are scheduled to play this weekend in a tournament they will host.
