Davis earns Player of the Week

DeDe Davis, Demopolis head coach Brian Seymore, and ESPN1049’s Sean Parker

The game certainly did not turn out the way Demopolis would have liked in a 29-18 loss to rival Thomasville to open the 2017 season. Still, a rare 100-yard receiving game from a Demopolis player merited the proverbial tip of the cap.

Davis, who has specialized as a defensive back throughout his varsity career, showed up and showed out as a slot receiver Friday night. The favorite target of Demopolis quarterback Andrew Patterson, Davis hauled in nine passes for 116 yards and a touchdown in the effort.

Demopolis will look to get off the deck Friday night against Greensboro. Davis will look to build on his early returns.

For his part, the Tiger senior earned ESPN1049 Player of the Week honors. Davis received a commemorative T-shirt Friday night and joined the network’s Coaches Show on air during its weekly live broadcast from Batter Up in Demopolis.

The strategy for Demopolis High against Calera last week was simple: pound the football. And there may be no better back to accomplish that task than senior powerhouse Jay Craig. The Tigers fed Craig time and time again Friday night as he ran over, through and around the Calera defense en route to 212 yards and five touchdowns on 30 carries.

Craig scored on runs of 19, 15, 2, 29 and 25 yards on the night, eclipsing the 100-yard mark by halftime. Craig’s consistency reached remarkable levels Friday as he gained four yards or more on 21 of his 30 carries.

Through two games thus far this season, Craig has 352 yards and six touchdowns on 50 carries. His efforts earned him ESPN 104.9 Coaches Show Player of the Week honors Tuesday when he was honored by the show’s crew at Batter Up Sports Grill in Demopolis.

Perhaps no team in 1A has had a more impressive road win this season than the one Linden posted last week when it knocked off Class 5A playoff qualifier Dora 33-28. In a contest in which the Patriots led by 14 and then trailed by 14, Eric Monroe played a key role for the LHS defense. He recorded six tackles on the night and recovered two fumbles.

The performance helped his team earn a win and it earned him Player of the Week honors from the ESPN 104.9 Coaches Show. Monroe participated in the show Tuesday at the Batter Up Sports Grill in Demopolis and received a commemorative T-shirt.

Linden is set to host Chickasaw Friday at 7 p.m. in the first round of the AHSAA, Class 1A state playoffs.

Marengo High School has a diminutive linebacker who plays with monstrous heart. Last week, that linebacker, who lists himself at a height of 5-4, turned in sensational effort against J.F. Shields in a 53-0 shutout.

Floyd Simmons, a senior and longtime starter for the Panthers, recorded 10 tackles including two sacks and returned a fumble 36 yards for a touchdown.

It would be easy to call it a career game except that Simmons does this kind of thing all the time. Very quietly the linebacker who stands at 5-4 has helped lead his team to a record of 5-4 after the Panthers were slow out of the gate to start the season.

Simmons earned Player of the Week honors from the ESPN 104.9 Coaches Show Tuesday and was honored at Batter Up Sports Grill in Demopolis where he spent time with the show’s crew, received a commemorative T-shirt and was interviewed on the air during the broadcast.

Marengo closes out its season Friday at Southern Choctaw.

For a defensive player, returning an interception for a touchdown is a memorable achievement. To do that twice in one game is special. A.L. Johnson safety Jeremy Mitchell had a special night last Friday in a 48-13 win over Keith.

Mitchell scored on interception returns of 55 and 30 yards respectively in the contest. The feat earned him Alabama Sports Writers Association Defensive Player of the Week honors. So it was virtually a no-brainer that the ESPN 104.9 Coaches Show crew would hand Mitchell his second distinction when it named him it Player of the Week Tuesday.

For his efforts, Mitchell spent time with the Coaches Show crew at Batter Up Sports Grill in Demopolis Tuesday night where he was interviewed during the show’s live broadcast. Mitchell also received a commemorative T-shirt.

A.L. Johnson is set to travel to Linden Friday night.

The Longhorns did not need Hayden Huckabee to get a lot of touches last Friday night, they just needed him to make the most of them. Huckabee did just that in Marengo Academy’s 48-13 win over South Choctaw Academy.

The junior only carried the ball four times, tallying 172 yards while turning in touchdown runs of 49, 70 and 41 yards. Huckabee also went 2-of-3 through the air for 104 yards including a 66-yard touchdown pass.

For his efforts, Huckabee earned ESPN 104.9 Coaches Show and West Alabama Watchman Player of the Week honors.

Cook earns ESPN 104.9 Player of the Week

Demopolis junior defensive end Rahmeel Cook practically lived in the Jemison backfield last Friday night.

Play after play Cook found himself around the football and the Jemison offense found him to have bad intentions. By night’s end, Cook had tallied 13 tackles and two sacks, leading a trio of Demopolis defensive lineman who boasted double-digit tackle tallies.

Monday, Cook earned ESPN 104.9 Coaches Show and WestAlabamaWatchman.com Player of the Week honors for his performance.

Cook was honored at Batter Up Sports Grill in Demopolis where he spent time with the Coaches Show crew and received a commemorative Player of the Week T-shirt.

Demopolis may have lost its season opener 18-14 to Thomasville but very little of that loss can be laid at the feet of the Tiger defense. And on that night, the leader of the Demopolis defensive effort was senior Tyler Colburn.

New to the defensive line position, Colburn played like a veteran last week against Thomasville, all but living in the THS backfield.

Colburn tallied 15 tackles, including five tackles for loss on the evening in addition to blocking an extra point.

But the highlight play of the night for Colburn came during a series in which Thomasville had driven deep into Demopolis territory. With a Thomasville score appearing all but guaranteed, Colburn penetrated the offensive line and blasted the ball carrier, jarring the ball loose. As the ball flew 12 yards from the spot of the hit, Colburn scrambled to his feet and outran a handful of players to recover the fumble he created.

For his efforts, Colburn earned the ESPN 104.9 Coaches Show/West Alabama Watchman Player of the Week award.

The crew of the ESPN 104.9 Coaches Show presented Colburn with a commemorative T-shirt and honored him during the broadcast Tuesday night at Batter Up Sports Grill in Demopolis.

Colburn becomes the second winner of the award for the 2014 season. Sumter Academy’s Blaine Winsett won the award a week ago. Winsett played offensive line, defensive line and middle line backer in the Eagles’ 27-0 win over Park Place of Mississippi.

Morrison, Midgorden earn POTW honors

photo-25In a week where only two teams in Marengo County won their respective games, the candidate pool for the ESPN 104.9 Coaches Show Player of the Week Award was largely limited to only two schools.

But when one of those teams pulled out a 60-59 double-overtime thrill ride of a win on the road against a Class 6A foe, well it stood to reason that Demopolis would boast the honor. The only question that remained was exactly which player would take home the commemorative T-shirt.

The answer was unveiled Tuesday night when the Coaches Show crew took to the air and announced offensive lineman John Anthony Morrison and kicker Leif Midgorden as dual recipients of the honor.

Much as he has all season, Morrison anchored the front line of an offensive unit that hung 60 points in the game. His work helped Roderick Davis to run for five touchdowns in the contest and was a key factor in the win sent the Tigers to 7-3 on the year.

Midgorden connected on all seven of his extra point attempts as well as the game-tying field goal at the end of regulation that forced overtime. On the season the player that known by The Watchman staff as The Norse god of Kicking has proven true on all but one extra point and one field goal.

The player were in attendance at Batter Up Tuesday evening where they received a commemorative T-shirt for the honor and spent time with the ESPN 104.9 West Alabama Coaches Show crew.
