Sweet Water sweeps area softball tourney

The Sweet Water High School Lady Bulldog softball team has had a busy and successful season this year under first year coaches Tony Echols and Mike Tucker.  The team is also assisted by volunteer coach Andy Black.

The team heads into region tournament play with a record of 18-15. The majority of the losses came against higher class schools in tournament play. Echols wanted to expose the girls to a high level of play to prepare them for the playoffs.

Sweet Water hosted the area tournament on April 24. Teams participating in the Class 2A, Area 3 tournament were SWHS, Washington County High School, Choctaw County High School and Southern Choctaw High School.

Sweet Water was the regular season area champ with a perfect 6-0 record in area play. Sweet Water went 3-0 in the area tournament to win the outright area championship.

Game one saw the Lady Bulldogs put together a 9-4 win over Southern Choctaw. Thea Luker worked five innings, struck out four and walked two while Emily Black came on for a two-inning save. Peyton Singley, Sara Irvin, Lara Little, Emily Black, Victoria Washington and Luker each tallied a hit in the game.

Game two resulted in a 5-2 Sweet Water win over Choctaw County. Black pitched a complete game with six strikeouts and two walks. Black had two hits in the game while Singley, Irvin, Littl, Bailey Brunson and Charlie Sturdivant each had one hit.

Sweet Water won the area championship with a 16-1 win over Washington County. Luker struck out six and walked two for the win. Irvin had two hits while Kayla Marshall, Kora Myers, Little and Sturdivant each had a hit in the game.
