Sweet Water splits against two power programs Monday

Sweet Water split a pair of games against stiff competition Monday in the first day of the Gulf Coast Classic.

Sweet Water 7, Westminster Christian 1

The Bulldogs opened play with a 7-1 win over Class 4A Westminster Christian. Jonah Smith allowed one run over seven innings while striking out 10 in the complete game effort. Sweet Water scored one run in the first and four more in the second before adding another in the four and one in the sixth in the win.

Smith also went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and one run scored. R.J. Rodgers scored a run while Cole Morgan went 1-for-4 with a triple and one RBI.

Will Huckabee drove in a run. Luke Davis went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Chance Broussard finished 1-for-3 with a run scored. Branson Davis went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Shamar Lewis finished 3-for-3 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored. Lewis, Smith and Luke Davis each stole a base.

The Randolph School 12, Sweet Water 7

The Bulldogs scuffled against Class 5A power Randolph in their second game of the day, surrendering seven earned runs in a 12-7 loss.

Smith went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Morgan scored a pair of runs while Huckabee went 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.

Wynn Thompson went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Braden Broussard finished 1-for-4 with Chance Broussard went 1-for-1. Davis scored a run. Lewis finished 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

Sweet Water is set to play Trinity Christian Tuesday afternoon and Pulaski (Tenn.) Wednesday morning.
