Sweet Water proves too strong for Marengo in region clash

Sweet Water scored early and put the game away late against Marengo Friday night during a battle for Class 1A, Region 1 supremacy. The Bulldogs used their backfield trio of Shamar Lewis, Jaylon Williamson and Jacory Brown to near perfection in the contest.

Brown scored on a 3-yard touchdown with 4:05 to go in the first quarter to put Sweet Water up 7-0. With 9:50 left, Jonah Smith hit Chastian Washington on an 8-yard scoring strike in the second to move the lead to 13-0.

On a night that saw Lewis run for 109 yards on only 13 carries, Williamson brought the hammer down on the Panthers in the fourth quarter with touchdown runs of 16 and eight yards, respectively. Williamson finished with 55 yards on six carries. Brown had 52 yards on 13 carries.  Smith also helped his squad by intercepting a pass on defense.

Alphonzo Lewis led the way for Marengo with 62 yards on 20 attempts.

Sweet Water (2-1, 2-0) travels to J.F. Shields next Friday night while Marengo (2-1, 1-1) hosts A.L. Johnson.
