Sweet Water pounds Excel 12-0

Sweet Water continued its early season excellence Monday as it hit the road for a 12-0 shellacking of Excel. The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Braden Broussard scored on Hunter Mendenhall’s fielder’s choice to make it 1-0. Will Huckabee relied on adept base running to make it home on the throw to put the Bulldogs up 2-0.

Shamar Lewis brought the thunder with two outs in the top of the fourth with a 3-run homer to plate John Thomas Etheridge and Taylor Lewis for the 5-0 lead. Jonah Smith moved it to 6-0 with a fifth-inning double to score Broussard for the 6-0 advantage. Three batters later, Etheridge singled in Smith and R.J. Rodgers for the 8-0 lead.

Sweet Water capped the scoring in the top of the sixth. Huckabee singled in Lewis to make it 9-0. Smith doubled home Broussard and Huckabee to push it to 11-0. Mendenhall singled in Smith to set the final margin.

Broussard was 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Huckabee went 3-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored. Smith finished 2-for-3 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored. Mendenhall was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Rodgers scored a run. Etheridge went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Taylor Lewis was 2-for-3 with a double, a stolen base and a run scored. Shamar Lewis finished 1-for-2 with a homer, three RBIs and, a stolen base and two runs scored.

Sasha Smith did yeomen’s work on the mound, striking out six over six shutout innings of work while scattering five hits and a walk.

Sweet Water (12-0) is set to play again Friday when they travel to Thomasville before hosting Clarke County for a double-header Saturday.
