Sweet Water plunders Pirates for nine turnovers in blowout

Sweet Water (6-2, 6-1) capped off Class 1A, Region 1 play Friday night with a 60-0 skunking of Fruitdale. The Bulldogs hung 34 points in the first quarter and opened the lead to 53-0 by halftime and cruised to the victory.

Jonah Smith found Will Huckabee for a 24-yard touchdown pass just 1:16 into the game and the Bulldogs scarcely let up from there. Less than a minute later, R.J. Rodgers returned an interception for a touchdown to stretch the lead to 14-0. Only 21 seconds later, Smith then hit Huckabee for another 24-yard touchdown strike for the 20-0 lead. The flurry was not yet over as Shamar Lewis scored on a 16-yard run 25 seconds later for the 27-0 lead. The Bulldogs managed 27 points in the span of a minute and 39 seconds to effectively put the game away.

Lewis scored again with 5:16 left in the first, sprinting 33 yards for the 34-0 lead.

Rodgers ran 80 yards to open the second quarter, moving the lead to 40-0. With 5:38 left until halftime, Xavier Lucy punched it in from two yards out. Jaylin Johnson then moved the lead to 53-0 on a 41-yard run with 1:30 left in the second quarter.

The Bulldogs capped the scoring at the 7:30 mark of the fourth quarter when Braiden Broussard scored on an 8-yard run.

Sweet Water totaled 390 yards on only 44 plays including 340 yard on 40 rushes. Fruitdale turned the ball over nine times including five fumbles and four interceptions. Rodgers led all rushers with 113 yards on four carries. Johnson finished with 91 yards on nine rushes. Lewis finished with 49 yards and two touchdowns on two carries. Rodgers picked off two passes in the game. Lewis intercepted one while Antonio Sullivan picked off one.
