Sweet Water beats Millry in error-filled contest

Sweet Water stayed unbeaten in Class 1A, Area 1 play Tuesday with an 8-4 home victory over Millry.

After Millry scored on a passed ball in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead, Sweet Water responded with a pair of runs in the home half of the frame. Luke Davis singled to drive in Jonah Smith, who reached on a single. John Thomas Etheridge then hit a sacrifice fly to center to plate Hunter Mendenhall for the 2-1 lead.

The Bulldogs added to the lead in the bottom of the third. Braiden Broussard drew a leadoff walk and scored on a wild pitch. Hunter Mendenhall then singled in Will Huckabee to push it to 4-1.

Millry’s Trey Lewis tied the game with two outs in the top of the sixth when he hit an inside-the-park homer that scored Coby Beasley and Zeke Turner who each reached on an error.

Sweet Water retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Mendenhall hit a leadoff single to start a four-run rally. Flynn Mabowitz reached on an error ahead of a Davis single to load the bases.

After Mendenhall scored on an error, Etheridge hit a sacrifice fly to left to drive in Mabowitz for the 6-4 lead. Shamar Lewis then singled in Davis to move the lead to 7-4. Sasha Smith then reached on an error and scored on another error to set the final margin. The teams combined for 13 errors in the contest while tallying just 10 hits between them.

Jonah Smith scattered three hits over six and two-thirds innings while striking out eight and allowing no earned runs for the win.

Sweet Water (16-5) is set to travel to Millry for a doubleheader Thursday.
