Sumter Academy pulls Homecoming win

YORK — Sumter Academy celebrated homecoming with a 35-20 win against the Lyman Ward Military Academy Rangers Friday, Oct. 3.

Sumter jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter with a 36-yard touchdown pass from Clay Truelove to Anderson Newman and two touchdowns from Nathan Williams, one an 11-yard reception from Truelove and the other on a 1-yard run.

Truelove extended the lead in the second quarter with a 17 yard run for a touchdown. Williamson’s fourth of five successful point-after kicks made the halftime score 28-0.

After an extended halftime for homecoming activities, Sumter picked up right where it left off with a Williamson scoring on a 13-yard run for a 35-0 advantage.

The Rangers would get on the board in the third quarter with a 27-yard pass from Marshall Barnes to Elijah Wilson. Barnes would hook up for another touchdown in the fourth, this time to Ranger receiver Ty Chambers. Lyman Ward Military would add one more score late in the game on an 85-yard run by Quan Stinson for the 35-20 final.

Sumter rushed for 181 yards led by Truelove’s 104, Wlliamson added 71 yards on 10 carries. Zach Maness had three receptions for 70 yards.

Cole Hanson led the Eagles on defense with seven tackles, Williamson had six stops on the night.

Sumter will play host to Jackson Academy Friday. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
