Marengo High School has a diminutive linebacker who plays with monstrous heart. Last week, that linebacker, who lists himself at a height of 5-4, turned in sensational effort against J.F. Shields in a 53-0 shutout.

Floyd Simmons, a senior and longtime starter for the Panthers, recorded 10 tackles including two sacks and returned a fumble 36 yards for a touchdown.

It would be easy to call it a career game except that Simmons does this kind of thing all the time. Very quietly the linebacker who stands at 5-4 has helped lead his team to a record of 5-4 after the Panthers were slow out of the gate to start the season.

Simmons earned Player of the Week honors from the ESPN 104.9 Coaches Show Tuesday and was honored at Batter Up Sports Grill in Demopolis where he spent time with the show’s crew, received a commemorative T-shirt and was interviewed on the air during the broadcast.

Marengo closes out its season Friday at Southern Choctaw.
