Rayburn Clyde Hamer, Jr

Rayburn Clyde Hamer, Jr, age 83,died July 10, 2015, at G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center, Jackson, Mississippi, after a short illness.

Mr. Hamer, a native of Demopolis, Alabama, was a graduate of the University of Alabama, the College of Engineering. He was a member of several honorary engineering and mathematics societies, Tau Beta Pi, Eta Kappa Nu and Pi Mu Epsilon, as well as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

He began his engineering career with General Electric Company in Waynesboro, Virginia. As he continued his career, he relocated to many different cities and was not only a leader in his work, but also in the communities where he lived. He had a diversity of interests and the ability to deal with each effectively. He was very active in civic and political activities, working with young people and serving in his church. He was an avid reader and bridge player. Also, he was a big sports fan, especially of Bear Bryant and the Roll Tide Roll sports teams!

Mr. Hamer served in the U.S. Navy, aboard the U.S.S. Bausell – DD-845, during the Korean Occupation, 1949-1955.

At the time of his death, he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Starkville, Mississippi.

The family will receive visitors at O’Bryant Funeral Home in Thomasville, Alabama on Wednesday, July 15 from 9-10:30 a.m. The graveside service will follow at the Choctaw Corner Cemetery.

Mr. Hamer was the son of the late Rayburn Clyde Hamer and Ruth Phillips. He is survived by his wife, Katherine Bouler, two children, Katie Hamer Ross of Starkville, Mississippi and Ray Hamer, III and his wife, Amber Praytor, of Starkville, Mississippi, four grandsons, Thomas Cecil Ross and David Hamer Ross of Raleigh, NC, Rayburn Chase Hamer of Prescott, Arizona and William Chadwick Hamer and his wife, Melissa Mason of Lemont, Illinois; a sister, Betsy McPherson and her husband, Buddy of Orange Beach, AL. Mr. Hamer preceded in death by his sister, Grace Jeanette Cauley and his brother, William Bryan Hamer.
