Productions at Old School open to all, thanks to Canebrake Players chair lift

Finally. After being shut down because of the coronavirus, the Canebrake Players will be able to showcase the new stair lift installed at the Old School Theater during its upcoming production of “Annie” Nov. 19-22.

The lift, located on the north side of the building, will enable those who must use a walker or wheelchair – or feel safer using a lift – to access the theater level.

Herron Hewitt, who plays the title role in the upcoming production of “Annie,” tries out the chair lift in the Old School.

After the lift was installed, the Canebrake Players also renovated the two main floor restrooms to be ADA compliant.

Made possible through a partial grant from the Alabama Historical Commission, the $14,200 chairlift was installed in the spring of 2020, just before the COVID-19 virus shut down public gatherings.

Patrons who choose to use the lift should enter using the ramp on the north end of the building.

“This is something we have worked toward for several years,” said Donna Bishop, treasurer of the little theater group. “We want our doors open for everyone.”
