Nellie Regina Whitfield Ulmer

Nellie Regina Whitfield Ulmer, age 94, of Demopolis, died Friday, September 22, 2017, at Marengo Nursing Home. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 26, 2017, at Kirk Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Anita Wilburn officiating. Burial will follow in Lipscomb Cemetery with Kirk Funeral Home Demopolis Chapel directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to service at Kirk Funeral Home Demopolis Chapel.

She was born June 22, 1923, in Birmingham, Alabama to Mary Cornelia Moreno and Thomas Holmes Whitfield.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Millard Barton Ulmer; a daughter, Dr. Susan Ellen Ulmer Wallace; a sister, Seana Whitfield McGraw; and brothers, Jesse and Tom Whitfield.

She is survived by a sister, Mary Johnson (Charles) of Hattiesburg, Miss.; a son, Dr. Millard Barton Ulmer, Jr. (Lewanna Caldwell) of Inman, S.C.; a daughter, Mary Regina Ulmer Galloway (Johnny) of Demopolis; four grandchildren, Dr. James Coleman Galloway, III, John Barton Galloway (Sarah), Kristi Regina Ulmer (Kari) and Kimberly Suzanne Ulmer (Alia); and five amazing great-grandchildren, Nico, Nathan, Nevan, and Nelle Marie Galloway and Eitan Ulmer.

Nellie and her family moved to the Foscue House in Demopolis, home of her grandfather, Jesse George Whitfield, from Birmingham in 1934 during the Great Depression.

She dated her move to Demopolis as a century from her great-great-grandfather, Nathan Bryan Whitfield’s move from North Carolina to Marengo County.

She was always devoted to Demopolis and Jefferson. She enjoyed work with the Jefferson churches and Jefferson Community Club and as a docent and researcher for Gaineswood and Bluff Hall. Her history interests included the Magna Carta Dames, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century.
Nellie and Millard were both members of the DHS Class of 1940 and many of her lifelong friends were also in their class. Nellie never forgot the hundreds of songs or poems she learned along the way.

She loved children and hated poinsettias.

Pallbearers will be Cole Galloway, Nico Galloway, Nathan Galloway, Nevan Galloway, Kristi Ulmer, Kim Ulmer, Tommy Woolf, and Tommy Lee.
