Mishaps plague Demopolis in 13-10 loss to Sipsey

An evening riddled with mistakes led to the second loss of the season for Demopolis (1-2) as the Tigers fell to Sipsey Valley 13-10 Saturday night.

The Tigers committed 10 errors, leading to five unearned runs while DHS pitchers issued 10 walks in the contest.

“The first two games, we hadn’t had a lot of hard hit groundballs. We did tonight. It’s always some amount of focus and it’s early in the year,” Demopolis coach James Moody said. “If we catch the ball, who knows what happens? But we didn’t catch it well.”

Sipsey Valley hung three runs on the board in the first, two in each of the second and third innings and five more in the fourth before tacking on an insurance run in the seventh.

Demopolis had its opportunities, scoring six runs in the third and four in the fourth to keep the game close. The Tigers, however, struggled to cash in while stranding nine runners in the contest.

“We didn’t lay down. We battled. We kept battling. We took advantage of some things they gave us,” Moody said. “We had a few hitters that made some adjustments at the plate and we competed.”

Sophomore hurler Ryan Morrison worked himself out of a jam in the fifth inning when loaded the bases with nobody out before striking out the first two hitters in the Sipsey order and inducing a flyball from the three-hole batter. Sophomore Jonathan Lewis followed with his first varsity action, allowing one run over two innings of work.

“I think we ran three 10th graders out there that gave up a few runs, but a lot of them weren’t all theirs,” Moody said. “They threw the ball well. They threw it across the plate against a quality team and that’s good for them and for the future for them and maybe it was a wakeup call for some of these older kids.”

Demopolis is set to play again Monday at Sweet Water with the varsity game beginning at 3:30 p.m. and the JV to follow.
