Martin, Black win inaugural Student-Athlete of the Year awards
The Marengo County Parks and Recreation Board in partnership with The West Alabama Watchman announced the inaugural recipients of the male and female Student-Athlete of the Year awards Tuesday night at the Demopolis Civic Center.
Marengo Academy senior Andrew Martin won the Male Student-Athlete of the Year Award while Sweet Water High senior Emily Black took home the Female Student-Athlete of the Year Award.
Martin earned West Alabama Watchman All-County honors as well as ASWA First Team All-State accolades in football and WAW All-County honors in baseball while hitting .400 and scoring 29 runs for the Longhorns. He is Top 10 in his class.
Black has a 4.0 GPA at Sweet Water and earned West Alabama Watchman Player of the Year honors in volleyball. She also earned WAW All-County recognition in softball.
The Marengo County Parks and Recreation Board and The West Alabama Watchman also made a $500 donation to the athletic departments of the respective winners.
Finalists for the male award included R.J. Cox of Demopolis, C.J. Robinson of Linden, Taylor Herelle of A.L. Johnson, Wynn Thompson of Sweet Water and Cordarius Pritchett of Marengo High.
Female finalists were Abbey Latham of Demopolis, Tomysha Boykin of Linden, Victoria Belcher of Marengo Academy, Tiffany Barber of A.L. Johnson and Alton James of Marengo High.
A selection committee combed over academic and athletic resumes as well as character references from principals and athletic directors as part of its selection process.
The event also featured Huntingdon College Football Coach and Athletic Director Mike Turk as its guest speaker.
