Marengo thumps Choctaw County in season opener

Marengo High gashed Class 2A Choctaw County with a multi-faceted ground attack that propelled the Panthers to a 62-0 season-opening win Friday night. Marengo tallied five touchdowns on the ground, one through the air, and one on special teams in the victory.

Alphonzo Lewis headlined the night with 193 yards and three touchdowns on eight carries. Roosevelt Thompson added 63 and a touchdown on six carries in addition to six 2-point conversion runs. Qindaris Ausbon had 51 yards and a touchdown on five carries. Calvin Ferguson had 52 yards on four carries.

JacQuan Fountain connected with Kema Packer on a 27-yard touchdown pass. Phillip Hosea returned a punt for a score. Devin Harris notched a safety for the Panther defense.

De’Angelos Crispin had seven tackles and a sack. Dominique Harris recorded four tackles. Johnny Kennedy had four tackles and a sack. Kevian Cade and Clarence Tolbert each had two tackles and a sack.

Marengo (1-0) opens Class 1A, Region 1 play next Friday night when it travels to Millry.
