Marengo Theatre closes its doors

The Demopolis Marengo Theatre staff announced via its Facebook page Monday evening that the facility is officially closed.

“This afternoon I was notified by Dr. Lessmann that the Marengo Theatre is closed,” the post read. “There will be no shows this weekend.”

The long-time Demopolis entity is owned by former Demopolis resident Dr. Erik Lessman and changed management late last year when former managers Jimmy and Nadia Dukes moved to Peru.

In the six months since, the facility has been operated by the Montelongo family, which attempted to keep the facility open.

“I would like to personally thank Jason Marlowe, the projectionist, who has been there many years, and along with Luis Montelongo and myself busted tail to start making improvements to the theatre. I also want to say thank you to all of our helpers in the last six months that we have been managers of the theatre. A big thank you to you the customers that spoke with us to let us know what would you thought would help, and stood by us during our time trying to make improvements so that this would not happen,” the remainder of the Facebook post reads. “However in this case we were unable to change the inevitable.”

Marengo Theatre joins a list of 2013 Demopolis closures that thus far includes Marketplace, Dirt Cheap, Taco Bell and Maison De Fleur.
