Marengo High nabs 22-8 win over Sunshine, eyes J.U. Blacksher

Marengo High School put another mark in the win column Friday night with a 22-8 victory over Sunshine High School.

Though the non-Region game did not directly affect Marengo’s playoff hopes, it was a good tune up for two critical upcoming Class 1A, Region 1 games against J.U. Blacksher and J.F. Shields.

“We’ll get to work on our game plan Monday (for Blacksher),” said Marengo head coach Eberne Myrthil. “We’ll be ready to play Thursday night.”

Marengo, now 1-3 in the Region and 3-4 overall, is “fighting for our playoff lives,” Myrthil said after last week’s win over McIntosh. The next two contests, he noted, are must-win affairs if the Panthers are to make the post-season.

Against Sunshine, Dewon Pritchett led the way with 185 yards rushing, while Tavoris Harris added 130 yards.

“I was pleased with our quarterback play,” said Myrthil. “Our quarterback (Cordarius Pritchett) is young, and even though we didn’t have to throw the ball, he managed the game well. And our offensive line played well – Phillip Treadwell, (Justin) Dunning and (Dequinta) Dixon and the others.

“Defensively we stepped up,” the coach continued. “We really got after it. I am really proud of our guys. Any time you control the clock and control the ball and limit turnovers, you’ll be successful.”

Myrthil also said his special teams played well against Sunshine, and noted that “our fans really came out and gave us their full support.”
