Marengo Academy drops Edgewood 5-0 in state tourney

MONTGOMERY — It was business as usual Andrea Edmonds as Marengo Academy (19-6-2) cruised to a 5-0 win over Edgewood in its AISA Class AA state tournament opener Friday.

“I saw a lot of poise, a lot of confidence,” Marengo coach Dane Edmonds said. “She was just doing her job.”

The University of West Alabama signee struck out four over seven innings of work while allowing only two hits and two walks along the way.

Katrina Harden singled in the second for Edgewood and drew both of the EA free passes. Kara Wilson had the only other Lady Wildcat hit.

Marengo got its bats going in the second with a four-run rally. Hanna Freeman drew a leadoff walk and scored on a Laramie Griffith RBI groundout. Amber Wilkinson reached on an error and gave way to pinch runner Mary Jordan Drake before Ryan Hale reached on a fielder’s choice. Edmonds followed with a two-run single to plate Drake and Hale for the 3-0 lead. Macey Petrey then ripped a single to center to plate Edmonds.

“It always helps to get breathing room. If we get runs, we feel good,” Dane Edmonds said. “We’ve struggled a little bit hitting the ball but we seem to wake up when we get here and it seems like we’re heading that way again.”

Edmonds gave herself a little insurance in the fifth with a solo homer. She finished the game 3-for-3 with a walk, three RBIs and two runs scored. Petrey finished 3-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Payton Stokes was 2-for-4 with a stolen base.

The Lady Longhorns amassed eight hits in the game but stranded eight runners along the way.

Marengo is set to play again at 4 p.m. Friday.
