DECATUR — Jessica Brock allowed just one hit and faced only two hitters over the minimum as West Alabama scored a convincing 12-0 college softball victory over Maryville at the Charger Chillout Tournament on Sunday.

The win earned the Tigers a split for the day, with Bellarmine coming from behind to defeat UWA, 5-4, in the second game. UWA takes a 5-2 record to Birmingham Wednesday for a doubleheader against Miles College.

Brock (1-1) walked a batter in the first inning and allowed a single in the fourth while striking out four Maryville hitters. Julie Jouglard (1-1) took the loss for the Saints. Lindsey Wiles (1-1) recorded the Bellarmine win in the nightcap. Sarah Ray (3-1) absorbed the loss.

“We definately should have won four games this weekend,” UWA head coach Will Atkinson said. “Jessica did a great job against Maryville and we played solid softball until the fifth inning aganst Bellarmine when we threw one away and ended up allowing four runs.

“It’s still early in the season,” Atkinson said. “Once we start not taking pitches off we will be better, but we will learn from this one and move forward.”

Whitney Brown and Brooklyn Phillips had a pair of hits in both games for UWA. Brown hit her second home run of the season in the loss to the Knights. Phillips had a two-out triple in the seventh inning against Bellarmine, but was left stranded on third to end the game.

Rebecca Schick had three singles in as many at bats and drove in a run in the loss to Bellarmine. Stephanie Shoup went 2-for-4 with a double and a stolen base in the win over Maryville.
