Longhorns fall to Edgewood in semifinals

MONTGOMERY — Marengo Academy (19-7) saw its end in the semifinals Wednesday with a 55-49 loss to Edgewood.

Marengo trailed 17-11 after the first quarter before using a second quarter run to narrow the gap. With 2:25 to go in the second quarter, Carson Huckabee dished off to his younger brother Hayden Huckabee, who drained a three to give the Longhorns their first lead since the opening moments at 24-23.

Edgewood recaptured the lead on the ensuing possession and carried a 26-25 lead into the halftime locker room. EA opened the lead to nine points in the third quarter before Marengo narrowed it again, trailing 37-34 after three quarters.

With 6:40 to go in the contest, Cason Cook backed down a defender on the right block and delivered a right-handed shovel pass to Sam Renner as he cut down the lane. Renner finished at the rim to give Marengo the 38-37 lead.

Drew Barnes delivered a jumper for Edgewood just 19 seconds later to put Edgewood back on top at 39-38.

With 2:31 to play, Hayden Huckabee fed Cook on the block to tie the game at 42. After Edgewood opened the advantage back to three points, Shad Pritchett hit a pair of free throws at the 2:08 mark to cut it to 45-44.

Josh Crawford capitalized on an And-1 opportunity at 1:53 to open the lead to 48-44 before Pritchett duplicated the feat at the other end just 10 seconds later.

After Edgewood opened it up to three again on an Austin Brown inbound to Tanner Payton, Carson Huckabee brought his team back one final time with a put-back that left MA down 50-49 with 38.5 seconds left. Edgewood then hit five free throws in the final 23.2 seconds to put the game away.

Cook and Pritchett each had 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Longhorns. Carson Huckabee had 10 points and 11 rebounds while Hayden Huckabee had 10 points.

Kelvin Lucky led Edgewood with 13 points and 15 rebounds. Crawford had 11 points and five rebounds while Jordan Edgeworth had 11 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Payton finished with 12 points for Edgewood.
