Leadership Academy brings together youth, law enforcement

Demopolis youngsters are getting a first-hand view of law enforcement this week as part of the Demopolis Police Department’s Youth Leadership Academy.

The program, sponsored by DPD, Demopolis Middle School, Boy Scouts of America and local businesses, schools and churches, is designed to build trust, teamwork, communication and commitment.

The Youth Leadership Academy is a four-day course designed for young men and women who wish to discover and hone their leadership skills. The camp focuses on academic and physical activity that promotes team building.

pic - youth leadership (running 2)The motto of “Knowledge, Teamwork, Trust, Communication and Commitment” is reinforced through para-military training. The academy offers fun alternatives for classroom instruction, which teaches the importance of leadership, character and life skills.

Among the activities this week, participants learned the history of law enforcement, conducted team-building exercises, took field trips to various places including the Alabama Criminal Justice Training Center (Police Academy), toured a local fire station, observed a sentencing at the Marengo County Courthouse and learned about bullying, peer pressure, active shooter situations, public speaking and enjoyed a fishing trip, among other activities.
