John Laney has won the Demopolis mayoral race, claiming 1112 of 1776 total ballots cast and ousting two-term mayor and incumbent Mike Grayson.

Laney is a former plant manager at CEMEX, former chairman of the Demopolis Industrial Development Board, and currently serves as president of the Marengo County Historical Society.

“I believe that for us to move forward as a community, we need to have a sense of urgency and accountability. I will be a mayor that provides both,” said Laney when he announced his candidacy in May.

“As mayor, I will work with the city department heads and use my experience, skills and perspective gained from 36 years of being in industries where budgeting and meeting budgets was essential to success.”

Laney was unavailable for comment Tuesday night.

Incumbent Mike Grayson said he was disappointed with the results of Tuesday’s election.

“I’m thankful for the friends who have stuck with me. The people of Demopolis have spoken and so it’s time for us to move forward,” said Grayson.
