Lady Tigers win Area 6 championship

The Demopolis High volleyball team (21-5) swept its way through the Class 5A, Area 6 tournament Tuesday and punched its ticket to the South Super-Regional.

“It lets them know that we have the potential to go further than we ever have before,” Sanders said of her team’s win in the area tournament. “They actually have confidence we can go past the first round of super regionals.”

The Lady Tigers opened the day with a 3-0 win over Wilcox Central (25-15, 25-8, 25-9).

Demopolis moved on to down Dallas County 3-0 in the championship round. The pivotal moment for the Lady Tigers came in the second game when they overcame a 22-18 deficit on the strength of Ivery Moore’s serves to win 25-22, polishing the victory off with a Moore ace.

“Reflecting on past games and how we’ve come back eight to 10 points, so they knew they had the ability to do it,” Sanders said.

Demopolis, which took game one 25-21, ran away with game three in a 25-15 victory.

The win sets up a match with Area 3 runner-up Charles Henderson Friday at 4:15 p.m. at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl.

“We really need to pick up on our quickness,” Sanders said of what her team needs to focus on heading into Friday’s tournament opener. “We’ve got to learn to read a ball. And we’ve got to put a ball away and not tire ourselves out on these long rallies.”
