Lady Tigers pick up pair of wins Monday

Demopolis played three matches Monday night, doubling its season win total in the process with victories over visiting American Christian Academy and Hale County.

The Lady Tigers opened the marathon evening by taking two of three games from the Lady Patriots (24-26, 25-22, 15-10).

“I was impressed with the way our girls played,” Demopolis coach Blythe Smith said. “We got off to a good start in the first game and then let it slip away. It was nice to see us bounce back and come from behind in the second game. It was a big win and we needed it.”

The Lady Tigers led 21-11 in game one before a meltdown put ACA with a 1-0 advantage. Demopolis found itself trailing in game two before showing its resiliency to pull out the win.

After ACA fell in three games to visiting Greensboro, the Lady Tigers took game one in their match against GHS with a 25-23 win. Demopolis appeared to have game two against Greensboro in hand before a late rally doomed the Lady Tigers with a 25-22 loss. Demopolis then lost 15-6 in the decisive third game.

“I felt like we were playing a strong match until the fatigue started to show in that second game,” Smith said. “We made some crucial mistakes as we got tired.”

The Lady Tigers wrapped up their evening with a 2-1 victory over Hale County (25-19, 19-25, 15-8), despite playing a total of nine games in just over five hours.

“I cannot say enough about the way our girls played,” Smith said. “We had great attitudes and great effort from all 12 of them. We showed our toughness and got contributions from everybody on the team. I feel like we got better today.”

The Lady Tigers are scheduled to take on Linden Tuesday at 5 p.m. at LHS. Demopolis will wrap up its week Thursday at Selma High School at 5 p.m.
