Lady Tigers outscore opponents 62-0 in Mardi Gras tourney

Demopolis (6-0) romped its way through the Washington County Mardi Gras Tournament Saturday with four shutout victories en route to the championship of the draw. After beating Excel 5-0 and Fruitdale 15-0 Friday, Demopolis opened Saturday with a 10-0 skunking of host Washington County.

Demopolis 10, Washington County 0

Kendall Hannah struck out 10 on 56 pitches in a five-inning perfect game for the win. The Lady Tigers scored five runs in the first inning, four in the second and one in the fourth. Courtney Smith and Elly Brown singled to open the game before Abbey Latham stroked a three-run homer to put Demopolis up 3-0. Bria Brown followed with a double and later scored on a Kayla Montz RBI single. Three batters later, Montz scored on a Taylor Smith sacrifice fly to move the advantage to 5-0.

Elly Brown doubled to open the second before Latham took a four-pitch walk. Montz singled to plate both runners for the 7-0 lead. Hannah followed with a two-run shot to move it to 9-0. The final run of the game came when Hannah doubled home Montz in the fourth.

Courtney Smith was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Elly Brown went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Latham finished 1-for-1 with a homer, three RBIs, two walks and two runs scored.

Bria Brown went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Montz was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs, Hannah was 3-for-3 with a run scored, three RBIs, a double and a homer. Taylor Smith drove in a run.

Demopolis 15, Southern Choctaw 0

Demopolis continued its relentless run with a four-homer in a 15-0 thrashing of Southern Choctaw. Montz picked up her second victory in the circle, striking out four batters in four innings while allowing two hits.

Courtney Smith drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first before Elly Brown was hit by a pitch. Latham followed with a three-run homer to put the Lady Tigers up 3-0. A Bria Brown walk and a Montz single set the stage for a two-run single by Anna Katherine Aldridge that moved the lead to 5-0.

Elly Brown kept her hot streak going in the second with a solo homer to left field. After a Bria Brown single, Montz homered to move the lead to 8-0.

The Lady Tigers really began to pour it on in the third. Taylor Smith singled in Aldridge. Courtney Smith singled in Taylor Smith. Elly Brown doubled home Courtney Smith. Bria Brown later stroked a two-run homer to drive in Latham.

Lane Braeden Burbage singled in Hannah in the fourth to make it 14-0 before Elly Brown took a beanball with the bases loaded for the final run.

Courtney Smith was 2-for-3 with a stolen base, one RBI and two runs scored. Elly Brown went 2-for-2 with a double, a homer, two runs scored and three RBIs. Latham finished 2-for-3 with a homer, two runs scored and three RBIs.

Bria Brown finished 2-for-2 with a homer, three runs scored and two RBIs. Montz was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a homer and a run scored. Alex Abrams and Hannah each scored a run.

Aldridge was 1-for-3 with one RBI and a run scored. Burbage went 1-for-2 with one RBI and a run scored. Taylor Smith finished 2-for-3 with one RBI and a run scored.

Demopolis 4, Sweet Water 0

The Lady Tigers had their closest contest of the afternoon in game three as they downed Sweet Water 4-0. Natalie Tatum anchored the shutout victory in the circle, striking out 11 over four innings of work while surrendering two hits.

Latham hit a solo homer with two out in the top of the first to open the scoring. Demopolis added insurance in the fourth. Taylor Smith hit a one-out double to ignite the rally. Her older sister, Courtney Smith, then singled her in for the 2-0 lead. Two batters later, Latham singled in Courtney Smith to make it 3-0. Elly Brown then scored on a wild pitch for the final margin.

Courtney Smith finished 1-for-2 with a stolen base, one RBI and a run scored. Elly Brown scored a run. Taylor Smith went 1-for-1 with a double and a run scored. Latham finished 2-for-2 with a homer, two RBIs and a run scored.

Demopolis 13, Satsuma 0

Demopolis completed its stranglehold on the tournament field with a 13-0 mauling of Satsuma in the tournament championship. Tatum struck out nine batters in the game while surrendering just two hits and a walk in four innings of work.

Courtney Smith led off the game with a single and later scored on a Latham RBI single to put Demopolis up 1-0. The score stayed there until the third when the Lady Tigers erupted for seven runs.

Bria Brown singled home Courtney Smith. Montz then ripped a two-run single to score Latham and Bria Brown. Montz then scored on an error to move the advantage to 5-0.

Abrams followed with a two-run triple to score Tatum and Hannah. Abrams put the lead at 8-0 when she scored on a passed ball.

The Lady Tigers drove the score up again in the fourth when Elly Brown scored on an error. Montz made it 10-0 with a single to plate Latham. Abrams later drew a bases-loaded walk to score Montz before Tatum scored on an error. Hannah scored the final run of the tournament on a fielder’s choice to set the lead at 13-0.

Courtney Smith was 1-for-4 at the plate with one RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored. Elly Brown went 1-for-2 with a run scored. Latham was 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored. Bria Brown finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs.

Montz went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Tatum was 1-for-2 with two runs scored. Hannah went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Abrams 2as 1-for-2 with three RBIs, a triple and a run scored. Taylor Smith finished 1-for-2 with one RBI.

Demopolis is scheduled to play again Tuesday in Moundville against Hale County.
