Lady Tigers crush Selma in Area 6 finale

DHS vs Selma region-2036Demopolis (15-13-1) won the Class 5A, Area 6 championship Monday with a 14-0 win over Selma in the final round of the area tournament.

“I like our team focus and attitude,” Demopolis head coach Joey Browder said of his team. “We played really well as a team.”

Zoe Lewis struck out six batters over four innings to pick up the win while also going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs in the game.

The Lady Tigers opened the scoring in the home half of the first by hanging five runs on the board. Victoria Washburn hit a leadoff single before Danielle Tatum stroked a RBI double to put DHS up 1-0.

Sydney Colyar followed with a RBI sacrifice fly to score Tatum. Lewis hit a two-out double and gave way to courtesy runner Zarquashia Taylor, who scored on a wild pitch.

Riley King walked and scored on a wild pitch. Courtney Lawrence reached on a hit-by-pitch and scored on a Washburn RBI base-on-balls.

Colyar reached on an error to open the bottom of the second before a RBI double by Alexis Jones put the Lady Tigers up 6-0.

DHS vs Selma region-2073Lewis followed with a RBI double to score courtesy runner Jessica Adams. Taylor stepped in to run for Lewis and scored on an illegal pitch.

King drew a walk and scored on a RBI double by King to put DHS up 10-0.

Tatum opened the bottom of the third with a single, went to second on an error, stole third and scored on a wild pitch.

After walks by Colyar and Jones, Lewis picked up a RBI with a ground ball. Adams, who served as the courtesy runner for Jones, scored on a wild pitch for the 13-0 lead.

Tatum walked to open the Demopolis half of the fourth and later scored on a Jones RBI sacrifice bunt. Colyar drew a walk and ultimately ended the game by scoring on a wild pitch.

Demopolis benefitted from 11 walks, four hit batsmen and seven wild pitches in the contest.

The Lady Tigers opened their day with a 15-0 win over Greenville.

Demopolis placed Tatum, Jones, Washburn, Lawrence and Colyar on the All-Tournament Team. Lewis earned Most Valuable Player honors for her efforts on the day.

Greenville representatives on the team were Olivia Foster and Tankevia Durant. Selma saw Shaquira Livingston, Ayana Moore, Tekeesha Wilson and Jashuan Davis make the All-Tournament Team.

The Lady Tigers are scheduled to play again Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Troy against Marbury in the South Central Regional Tournament.

“We’ve got to get our bats going and make some adjustments to better speeds and faster pitching,” Browder said of his team’s focus over the duration of the week. “What is key for us is maintaining our team focus and attitude. I really like the way we’re playing right now. That’s what being successful in Troy is all about.”
