Lady Longhorns win region crown

MONROEVILLE — Marengo Academy held off a late Sparta run Saturday afternoon to pull out a 47-41 victory and clinch the AISA Class A, Region 1 championship.

Trailing 40-27 entering the final frame, Sparta embarked on a 14-5 run to pull to within four with less than a minute to play. But a quartet of fouls in the final minute ultimately sent Katie Tucker to the charity stripe late where she knocked down a pair of free throws to ice the contest.

The Lady Longhorns trailed 7-3 in the first quarter before putting together a 21-9 run to take an eight-point lead into the locker room.

The contest saw seven different Lady Longhorn players score without the benefit of a three-point field goal all afternoon.

Brooke Smyly led the Lady Longhorns with 15 points. Andrea Edmonds added 12 points for Marengo Academy while Chandler Stenz finished with seven. That trio represented the Lady Longhorns on the All-Tournament Team.

Marengo Academy will play again next week at Huntingdon College in Montgomery as part of the AISA Sate Championship Tournament.
