Lady Longhorns win Morgan tournament

The MA Lady Longhorns varsity softball team went 6-0 in a tournament at Morgan Academy over the weekend. Team Members are Carole Anne Gunter, Alexia Johnson, Taylor Barley, Katie Tucker, Reesa Holifield, Marti Breckenridge, Dudley Long, Payton Stokes, Amber Wilkinson, Anna Michael Crocker, Conner Eheridge, Caitlin Andrews, Andrea Edmonds, Chandler Stenz, Kimberly Moore, Taylor Johnson and Brooker Smyly. The team is coached by Danny Stenz, Duane Edmonds, Craig Smyly and Barbara Etheridge.

The Marengo Longhorns were 6-0 in two days of play this weekend at Morgan Academy’s Softball Tournament where they defeated Macon East of Montgomery 3-0 to win the championship game.

Andrea Edmonds was the winning pitcher striking out eight and allowing just one hit and no walks.

Chandler Stenz performed well at the plate going 2-for-3 and one run scored. Katie Tucker was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Alexia Johnson was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Lady Horns (8-0) played two other games on Saturday defeating Clarke Prep 3-0 and Tuscaloosa Academy 7-1.  Edmonds was the winning pitcher in both games. Against Clarke Prep she had 10 strikeouts and allowed one hit. In the Tusccaloosa game she had eight strikeouts, allowed three hits and gave up one walk.

Conner Etheridge and Katie Tucker had two hits each in the Clarke Prep game. Against Tuscaloosa, Tucker had three hits and Anna Michael Crocker, Brooke Smyly and Taylor Barley each had two hits.

The tournament success followed a gritty performance Thursday, Feb. 28 in which the team defeated Pickens Academy 2-0.

In that contest Andrea Edmonds pitched seven innings and had 16 strikeouts while allowing just one hit and one walk. Chandler Stenz was 1-for-3 with one run scored. Alexia Johnson and Brooke Smyly each had a hit in the game.
