Lady Longhorns go 2-2 in 24-hour span

Marengo Academy (5-3) shut out Pickens County Thursday night before scuffling through the first day of tournament play Friday in Selma.

Andrea Edmonds worked seven strong innings Thursday, scattering three hits and striking out 14 for the Lady Longhorns in the win over Pickens.

Chandler Stenz walked and scored a run. Anna Michael Crocker went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs. Brooke Smyly walked twice while going 1-for-2 with a run scored.

Emonds drew two walks at the plate while issuing none in the circle. Conner Etheridge finished 1-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Caitlin Andrews finished 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Ryan Hale drew a walk in the game.

Marengo struggled mightily Friday, going 1-2 in timed tournament games with losses to Morgan Academy and Glenwood before closing out the day with a win over Ashford.

Crocker worked five innings in the 5-3 loss to Morgan while allowing only two earned runs. Crocker also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple and a RBI.

Smyly finished 1-for-3 with a run scored. Edmonds reached on a hit-by-pitch and scored a run.

Etheridge went 1-for-2 and picked up one RBI. Andrews went 1-for-2 while Macey Petrey finished 1-for-2 with a run scored.

Marengo Academy lost the second game of the day with a 2-1 setback to Glenwood. Edmonds struck out three over five innings of work and allowed just one earned run in the game.

Stenz and Smyly each went 1-for-3 while Crocker went 1-for-2. Edmonds drew a walk while Etheridge and Andrews each finished 2-for-3 at the plate.

Petrey finished the game 1-for-2 with a double and one RBI while Payton Stokes scored a run.

The Lady Longhorns finished the day on a high note with a 3-0 win over Ashford in which Edmonds worked a five-inning no-hitter.

The junior pitcher finished the game with six strikeouts and one walk in the near perfect game.

Stenz went 3-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored. Crocker went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Smyly picked up one RBI on a sacrifice fly.

Etheridge finished 1-for-3 while Stokes went 1-for-2. Petrey wrapped the game 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored.

The Lady Longhorns are set to resume tournament play at 9 a.m. Saturday.
