Lady Longhorns advance to semi-finals

MONTGOMERY — Marengo Academy (24-2) is one step further than last season and two steps away from its goal after downing Edgewood 46-28 in the first round of the AISA Class A state tournament Wednesday.

Marengo Academy coach Danny Stenz is hopeful the experience of a first-round tournament loss a season ago may be enough to propel his team over the hump and into the state title round.

“They’re experienced. They’re more mature. They’re sharing the ball a little bit better and are kind of an unselfish bunch this year. That’s what I like about them. They are more balanced sharing,” Stenz said. “We didn’t play exceptionally well today, but we played good enough to get a win. All you want to do is advance.”

Chandler Stenz paced the Lady Longhorns with 13 points. Brooke Smyly had nine points while Anna Michael Crocker finished with eight and Andrea Edmonds had seven.

The win sets up a date with Patrician Academy next Wednesday at 9 a.m. at Huntingdon College in Montgomery.
