International tiebreaker hands Marengo first loss

It came down to the international tiebreaker in the bottom of the fifth Thursday, but Marengo Academy took a 6-5 loss to Patrician in its first game of the Gator Classic at Clarke Prep.

The Longhorns took an early 2-1 lead in the first inning aided by hits from the senior tandem of Hannah Freeman and Macey Petrey as well as seventh grader Trinity Wilkinson.

Patrician hung four on the board in the second inning to go up 5-2. Marengo stormed back over the next two frames, getting a hit from Freeman that helped set up Petrey’s RBI sacrifice fly. Wilkinson doubled in two to tie it in the fifth.

“There is lots of young talent out there and lots of leadership by our seniors,” Marengo coach Crhis Petrey said. “I am excited to see what it is in store this year and for years to come.”

Freshman Morgan Broadhead and eighth grader Riley Newton also recorded a hit apiece in the contest.

Marengo is 1-1 following the game.
