Huckabee leads Longhorns to 13-6 win over South Choctaw

BUTLER – Freshman Hayden Huckabee made his presence known with two fourth quarter touchdowns to lead Marengo Academy (1-0) to a 13-6 victory over South Choctaw (1-1) Friday night.

With his team trailing 6-0 Huckabee, the Longhorn quarterback, broke a 78-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter to tie the game. Brant Lewis added the extra point to put MA up 7-6.

Huckabee later guaranteed the Longhorns would not lose that lead when he intercepted a pass and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown to put Marengo up 13-6 with only seven seconds remaining.

Josh Holifield sealed the win by sacking the SCA quarterback and forcing and recovering a fumble on the game’s final play.

South Choctaw scored the game’s first touchdown with a one-yard run by Adam Bonner in the second quarter.
Marengo Academy, which went 2-8 a season ago, picked up the win despite compiling only three first downs in the contest thanks in large part to its defensive effort.

The Longhorns held SCA to 199 yards total offense while forcing three turnovers on the night.
David Creel recovered a SCA fumble that was forced by Joseph Sammons. Christian Cook finished with 11 total tackles to lead the team while Kyle Adams had 10 stops and Hayden Hall had nine. Thomas Etheridge also finished with nine tackles and a sack.

Marengo will open its home slate next week when East Wood visits the Longhorns in Linden.
