Hannah grand slam fuels Demopolis rout

Demopolis split a pair of games Friday to open its visit to the Northside tournament.

Lamar County 2, Demopolis 1

The Tigers opened the weekend with a 2-1 loss to Lamar County in a seven-inning, non-tournament warmup contest. Lamar County took a 1-0 lead in the first and kept it until stretching it to 2-0 in the top of the sixth inning.

Kendall Hannah hit a solo shot with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to 2-1. Alex Abrams singled in the bottom of the seventh to get the tying run aboard but the Tigers were unable to cash in on the opportunity.

Demopolis tallied eight hits in the contest but could not break through. Natalie Tatum scattered four hits and struck out six while allowing two earned runs in the game.

Demopolis 10, Carbon Hill 2

Demopolis followed with an impressive 10-2 victory over Carbon Hill to open tournament play. The Tigers did all their damage in the first and fourth innings. Abbey Latham hit a two-run homer in the top of the first for a 2-0 lead. After a Tatum single and Hannah double, Kayla Montz singled both runners home for the 4-0 advantage. Carbon Hill cut the lead in half with a solo homer in each of the first two innings.

Montz took a hit-by-pitch to open the top of the fourth. Three batters later, Courtney Smith singled to set up Elly Brown’s RBI single that moved the lead to 5-2. Latham then singled in Smith to make it 6-2 before a Tatum walk loaded the bases. Hannah stepped up and blasted a 1-0 pitch over the the center field fence for a grand slam for the 10-2 lead.

Hannah took the win in the circle while Montz worked two and two-thirds innings for the save.

Demopoils (32-9) continues tournament play Saturday.
