Four injured, downtown traffic diverted after two-vehicle accident

photo 5A two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Walnut and Jackson in Demopolis has left four injured and downtown traffic diverted.

The collision occurred just before 12:12 p.m. Monday between a Chevy Tahoe traveling west bound on Jackson Street and a Ford Expedition heading south on Walnut Avenue.

Both vehicles sustained significant damage and the Expedition struck a city power pole, bringing down the pole and the two traffic signals it helped suspend.

The Tahoe, which has a Jackson, Miss. license plate, contained three individuals while the Expedition was manned by only the driver. All four individuals involved in the crash have been taken to Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital and their conditions are not known at this time.

Sgt. Derrick Carter of the Demopolis Police Department is leading DPD officers on scene at this hour and reports that traffic is being diverted between Pettus Street and Perry Street as well as Strawberry Avenue and S. Main Avenue, covering a two-block radius from the scene of the accident.
