Emily Thompson proves to be a Very Distinguished Young Woman

Eight lovely ladies from Marengo County showed off their poise, strength, and talent, proving it takes more than beauty alone to be a Distinguished Young Women.

The competition, formerly known as Junior Miss, was held tonight at the Demopolis High School Auditorium at seven o’clock. Representing Demopolis High School were Ali Cristwell, Riley King, Rachel England and Baleigh Grace. The Sweet Water High School representatives were Chynna Ernest, Andrea Landrum, Shelby Thompson and Emily Thompson.

$7500 was divided and awarded to the contestants who won in each division along with a first and second alternate to the winning Distinguished Young Woman.

Baleigh Grace was awarded the Spirit of Distinguished Young Women by the other young ladies in the competition.

Riley King received second alternate and a $1,000 scholarship.

Rachel England won first alternate along with being awarded the Scholastic Achievement Award and winning the Signature Contest.

Emily Thompson from Sweet Water High School proved she was Marengo County’s Distinguished Young Woman for 2014 by not only winning the title but winning three of the four categories. Thompson won Talent with her vocal performance of “I Just Want To be a Star” from the off-Broadway show Nunsense. She was also awarded the Physical Fitness and Self-Expression scholarships, bringing her total earning for the night to $3,750. Emily plans on using  her scholarship money to attend Mississippi State University and major in Child Psychology.

Emily is the daughter of Michael and Kim Thompson. She is the Captain of the Sweet Water Cheerleading squad, a UCA All-American Cheerleader, a member of FCA, the Co-Editor of the High School’s Yearbook, a member of the Beta Club and a youth member at Sweet Water Baptist Church.

Thompson is excited to represent Marengo County in the 2014 Distinguished Young Woman of Alabama competition next year.
