Eagles win, look ahead to Linden

A.L. Johnson’s Eagles took a 34-22 win over Ellwood Christian Friday night, setting the stage for an intra-county battle with Region foe Linden High next week.

“Linden comes calling Friday night,” said A.L. Johnson head coach Mose Jones, who saw his team move to 4-1 with Friday’s win over ECHS. “That’s always a big game. We just want to keep doing what we’ve been doing and hope we play well.”

Against Ellwood Christian, Zynell McGhee scored two touchdown to lead the Eagle effort, while Charles Edwards, Lawrence Burrell and Michael Croom also added touchdown runs.

“We were very good in the running game,” said Jones. “They couldn’t stop us, but we couldn’t stop them, either. They had a great big back that we had problems with all night.”

Jones did praise the defensive play of Melton Bell, who “came up with several big sacks,” according to the coach.
