Dr. Judy Travis’ medical license placed on probation

The Medical Licensure Commission of Alabama Friday, August 9, placed the license to practice medicine for local physician Dr. Judy Travis on probation.

The order came after a hearing on July 23. Her license has been placed on probation subject to her undergoing an evaluation at UAB within the next 90 days and submitting to and completing testing, evaluation or treatment recommended by the evaluation.

Dr. Travis cannot prescribe any substance controlled under the Controlled Substances Act or the Alabama Uniform Controlled Substances Act.

The Commission concluded that Dr. Travis committed unprofessional conduct “by prescribing medications to herself and two of her children,” violated code by failing to maintain patient medical records, that she dispensed medications “without registering as a dispensing physician as required by (the) Board of Medical Examiners, failed to keep and maintain a controlled substance log or dispensing record, failed “to provide medical oversight and direction” to her Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner and committed “gross malpractice, repeated malpractice and gross negligence in the practice of medicine by subjecting patients to unnecessary health risks.”

The Commission also determined Dr. Travis “prescribed combinations of medications” that were dangerous to her patients; that she prescribed “unusually high doses of narcotics;” that she prescribed those doses “to patients who repeatedly tested positive for street drugs,” and that she “prescribed high doses of narcotic and other medications to patient who repeatedly violated their patient narcotic agreements.”
