The Demopolis Police Department opened the day Thursday by sending its honor guard to lower the American flag to half mast. The brief ceremony came in observance of the 13th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, the date of the most horrific terror attack in United State history.

“The honor guard guys are going to lower the flag and present arms in memory of those who lost their lives 13 years ago today,” Demopolis Police Department Chief Tommie Reese said before the ceremony. “We want to take a moment to remember them and even those that went to war after that. We’re in kind of a crucial time right now with the stuff happening in the Middle East with ISIS and we kind of take freedom for granted. We want to take a moment to reflect.”
