DMS, Sweet Water football play to draw

The Demopolis Middle School Tigers battled their way to an 8-8 tie on the road at Sweet Water Monday.

Juan McClain sprinted for a 27-yard touchdown on the Tigers’ first possession of the game. Demopolis added the conversion to go up 8-0. The game stayed that way through halftime and into the fourth quarter before Sweet Water’s Braiden Broussard dove in from two yards out to cut it to 8-6 with 7:00 to play. The conversion knotted the game.

Demopolis had its chance to take a lead when it drove the ball inside Sweet Water’s 30 before the march stalled.

Sweet Water appeared poised to take advantage when it pushed the ball all into the Demopolis red zone. C.J. Williams picked off a Bulldog pass with 1:00 left to nullify the effort. Demopolis looked to take advantage of the miscue until Broussard picked off a 4th down heave as time expired.

“It was a slugfest between two great coached team,” Sweet Water coach Jonathan Farr said. “Coach Silcox does a great job with his guys.”

“Coach Farr does a great job with those guys, and they have some guys that are game changers,” Demopolis coach Jeremy Silcox said. “We will look to prepare for Greensboro. We’re still taking it one day at a time.”

Demopoils tallied 195 yards rushing in the game. McClain led the way with 87 yards on nine carries. Aldraus Pruitt totaled 76 yards on eight carries. R.J. Smith tallied 34 yards on three rushes.

Sasha Smith led Sweet Water with 65 yards on four catches to go along with 55 yards on the ground.

Juan McClain led Demopolis with five tackles while Alton Rowser had a sack.

While Demopolis preps for Greensboro, Sweet Water readies to play Millry next Tuesday at 5 p.m.
