The Demopolis Middle School Junior Beta Club is looking for another successful campaign this academic year after sending four students to the National Convention in Mobile over the summer.

The 2012-2013 collection of DMS Junior Beta Club members included five girls who attended the state convention in Huntsville in March.

Students competed in a variety of areas that included academics, a poster challenge, an art challenge and a talent competition.

Camilla Tutt took third place for DMS in the Special Talent Competition. Kate Floyd won the Acrylic Painting contest. Mary McClain Colgrove, Kathryn McAlpine, Caroline Overmeyer and Sidney Alyn Atkins worked together to win the poster competition.

Colgrove, Floyd, Atkins and McAlpine each attended the National Convention in June.

Colgrove later went on to attend The Beta Broyhill Leadership Conference July 19-24 at Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C. While there, Colgrove participated in leadership meetings, socials and various lesson meetings.

Colgrove also participated in an empathy luncheon in which students were given challenges related to various disabilities. Some were blindfolded to gain a deeper understanding of being blind while others had their hands tied behind their backs to represent amputations. The students then had to attend the luncheon with their disability and overcome the challenge while learning to serve and trust others.
