DHS guard Ivery Moore to play in North-South game
All-star squads for the 2015 North-South boys’ and girls’ basketball games have been selected.
Sixty outstanding junior basketball players, 15 on each team, were chosen from nominations submitted by high school coaches from across the state to participate at the 19th annual AHSAA Summer Conference and AHSADCA All-Star Games competition in Montgomery July 20-25, according to an announcement by Alvin Briggs, Director of the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association (AHSADCA).
The girls’ and boys’ basketball games will be at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome on the Alabama State University campus July 22 at 6 and 8 p.m., respectively.
The AHADCA All-Star Games also include in-state all-star games in soccer, baseball, volleyball and softball. The 55th North-SouthAll-Star football game will be played the previous week and is set for Friday, July 17, at Cramton Bowl.
The AHSAA Summer Conference is a week-long conference that includes sports specific clinics and special sessions for coaches, principals, athletic directors, cheerleading coaches and officials. Also, an All-Sports Equipment Expo and other related activities are scheduled throughout the week.
Among the conference’s highlights will be the Sportsmanship Luncheon honoring all schools that have not had an ejection or fine during the 2014-15 school year and the Championship Coaches Awards Banquet that includes the naming of the 2014-15 Making A Difference Award Recipients ,Coaches of the Year, and the AHSADCA Athletic Director of the Year. Chris Love of Oak Mountain and Brian Pounders of Deshler will coach the North boys’ all-stars with Llewellyn serving as administrative coach. Dallas County’s Willie Moore, who led the Hornets to the 2015 Class 5A state tournament after winning the 4A title in 2014, will be coaching the South with John Price of Faith Academy. Price’s team has reached the 5A state tournament the last two years. Card is the South administrative coach.
The North Boys’ all-star basketball squad features 6-foot-6 junior Josh Langford of Madison Academy, the ASWA Class 3A player of the year after leading the Mustangs to the 3A state title, and 6-4 Justin Hopkins, who helped J.O. Johnson claim the Class 5A state crown. The South squad features 6-9 Cameron Diggs Crawford of Blount, the tallest player in the game, and Carver-Montgomery’s Antonio Nelson, a key player in the Wolverines’ Class 6A state championship run in 2015.
Guards Emma Wallen and Ivy Wallen of Lauderdale County headline the North girls’ team. Sisters in the famed Lady Tigers “triplets”, Emma was named the Class 3A player of the year by the Alabama Sports Writers Association and Ivy was selected MVP of the Class 3A state tournament as Lauderdale County closed out a 39-0 season. Also on the North squad is Class 5A state tournament MVP and ASWA 5A player of the year Kaitlyn Rodgers, a power forward from Wenonah. Headlining the South squad are Ahyiona Vason and Jasmine Walker of 2015 Class 7A state champion Jeff Davis and Harriett Winchester, MVP of the Class 1A state tournament for state champion Keith. Walker was the 7A state tournament MVP. Also on the South squad are Cierra Johnson of Blount and Lacy Stafford of Geneva County, the ASWA Class 6A and 2A players of the year, respectively, for the 2014-2015 season.
The North swept both games last year. The North Boys are 46-25 in the series dating back to 1953 and currently own a 12-game winning streak heading into 2015. The North Girls are 16-2 in the series that began in 1997 and have won the last seven games.
