Demopolis wins region crown in rout of Wilcox Central

Demopolis (7-1, 6-0) gave up a touchdown on the first possession of the game and then took complete control in a 58-6 win over Wilcox Central Friday night.

The win gives Demopolis the Class 5A, Region 4 crown, the program’s first region title since 2010.

“I think what it means is giving you a first round playoff game at home,” Demopolis coach Tom Causey said. “And it is always good to be a champion in anything. The important thing is our guys set that as one of their goals and they went out and accomplished that.”

Wilcox popped a 57-yard run on the first play from scrimmage and parlayed it into a 14-yard touchdown pass to take a 6-0 lead with 10:25 to play in the first quarter.

Demopolis responded with a methodical 11-play drive that covered 54 yards and culminated with a 7-yard Drew Jones touchdown run.

Less than two minutes later, Jayjerrin Craig scored on a 6-yard touchdown run set up by an A.J. Collier interception.

With 1:32 to play in the opening quarter, Rashad Lynch scored on a 9-yard run to put the Tigers up 21-6.

Logan McVay popped a 65-yard touchdown run with 8:46 to play in the second quarter to stretch the lead to 28-6.

McVay then went over the top to Wil Stephens with 5:31 to play in the opening half for an 8-yard touchdown pass. The play was the first touchdown of Stephens’ career and left the Tigers up 35-6 at half.

Lynch took the opening kickoff of the second half 77 yards for a touchdown, leaving the Tigers up 42-6. Erin White recorded a safety with 2:29 to play in the third, stretching the lead to 44-6.

Freshman Andrew Patterson scored on an 11-yard run with 4.9 seconds left in the frame to up the lead to 51-6. After Patterson’s first career touchdown, Jeremy Foster made the first end zone visit of his career on a 1-yard score with 5:22 left in the game.

“Twos, I’m really proud of the way you finished the game tonight,” Causey told his reserve units following the game.

Tim Bonner had 12 tackles, five tackles for loss, a sack and a fumble recovery to lead the Demopolis defense. Rahmeel Cook had 12 tackles including four for a loss. Jones had 10 tackles with a pass deflection and an interception.

Percy Cistrunk also got his first career interception.

Demopolis travels to Selma next week to play Dallas County.
