Demopolis volleyball hosting area tournament Tuesday

The Demopolis High Lady Tiger volleyball team will host the Class 5A, Area 6 Tournament Tuesday.

“This is a big deal for us as a program,” Lady Tiger coach Blythe Smith said. “This was one of our goals at the beginning of the year and it is nice to have accomplished it.”

Demopolis, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, will carry its 12-7 overall record into a first round match with Greenville. That contest will open the tournament at 1 p.m.

“As nice as it is for us to have won the right to host this tournament, we have to put all of that behind us and just play volleyball,” Smith said. “This is the beginning of kind of a second season for us. Nothing we did in the regular season matters from here on out. And if we come out and don’t win the area championship, nobody will remember who hosted it anyway.”

Following the conclusion of the opening match, No. 2 seed Selma will play No. 3 seed Sumter Central. Upon the conclusion of that contest, the two winners will meet in the Area 6 championship.

The AHSAA set price for tickets is $6 and students who purchase tickets will be released from class at 12:50 p.m. Tuesday to attend the tournament.
