Demopolis High (8-3, 2-0) landed two key wins Tuesday night as the Lady Tiger volleyball squad downed area foe Wilcox-Central and rival Greensboro.

The Lady Tigers opened the afternoon with a 3-0 win against Wilcox. Demopolis took game one 25-9 before trouncing Wilcox 25-2 in the second game, a contest that saw freshman Napoleon Roberson serve up 19 consecutive points.

“She is probably one of my best players all around,” Demopolis coach Angela Sanders said. “She’s very solid at every position and if I need someone to step up, I can always count on her.”

The Lady Tigers finished off the match with a 25-13 win over Wilcox in game three, moving the area record to 2-0.

“I expect to win every single area game,” Sanders said. “There’s no reason to lose with the talent we have.”

Following the area victory, Demopolis played rival Greensboro in a best-of-three match. The Lady Tigers rallied to take game one 27-25 after trailing 23-19. The second game saw Greensboro take a 25-19 win, a hot streak it continued when it took a 7-2 lead in the deciding third game.

The Lady Tigers rallied again, overcoming the deficit to take a 15-12 victory, defeating Greensboro for the first time in more than five years.

“I think our defense is our biggest improvement,” Sanders said of how her team has changed since opening the season Aug. 28. “But we really need to improve on our offense and hitting at the net. That’s where we’re struggling.”

Demopolis showed flashes of improved play in both those areas against Greensboro and will have the opportunity for further improvement when it plays four matches next week. Demopolis is set for a tri-match in Thomasville with THS and Linden before hosting area games against Sumter Central Tuesday and Dallas County Thursday.
