Demopolis splits pair in Saturday double-header

Demopolis (3-1) split a pair of home shutouts Saturday, blasting Hale County 9-0 before losing to Sweet Water 11-0.

Hunter Colyar toed the rubber for the opener, working six innings and striking out eight on the way to a one-hit shutout. Andrew Patterson pitched a scoreless seventh to cap the victory.

The Tigers scored three runs in the second, two in the third, one in the fourth and three in the sixth.

Patterson, Wesley Allgood and DeDe Davis scored on three separate errors in the second for the 3-0 lead. The Tigers added to it in the third when Charles Casper scored on a Ryan Morrison’s RBI fielder’s choice to make it 4-0. Jonathan Lewis then found his way home on a passed ball for the 5-0 advantage.

Henry Overmyer scored on a dropped third strike in the fourth. Chandler Barton added to the woes in the sixth when he scored on a passed ball. Casper then singled home Overmyer for the 8-0 lead. Demopolis capped the scoring with Lewis’s RBI fielder’s choice to send Hudson Holley home.

Casper went 2-for-4 with a double, one RBI and a run scored to account for 40 percent of the Tigers’ five hits. Patterson, R.J. Cox and Colyar each singled once to account for the rest of the hits.

Demopolis managed only four baserunners in the loss to Sweet Water, getting singles from Holley and Colyar as well as a walk from Ryan Morrison and a hit-by-pitch against Cox.

The Bulldogs scored one in the first, two in the second, three in the third, three in the fourth and two in the sixth en route to the victory.

Demopolis is scheduled to play again Friday against St. James.
