Demopolis Rotary Club sponsoring Renew Our City

Friday will mark the beginning of what the Demopolis Rotary Club hopes will quickly become an annual endeavor as it launches its Renew Our City initiative.

Working in conjunction with Alabama Power and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the popular Renew Our Rivers project, the Demopolis Rotary Club is encouraging individuals around the city to show pride in their community and help clean up Demopolis.

“The motto for Rotary is ‘Service before self.’ So we were just looking for a project to help the community,” Demopolis Rotary Club member and Renew Our City organizer Diane Brooker said of the genesis of the project.

As part of the initiative, Rotary members will be cleaning up, cutting grass and engaging in other beautification activities around the city.

The project, which will take place Friday and Saturday, is about much more than improving the aesthetics of the city, according to Brooker, who is well-versed in the effects a city’s appearance can have on its potential for economic development.

“It shows people who are coming in here the pride that every individual has in the community,” Brooker said. “Anytime a community shows pride in itself, it reflects a positive image for the entire community and with it helps in all forms of tourism and economic development.”

With that goal in mind, Rotary Club members are encouraging community members to clean up around their homes, yards and any other areas that may require attention.
